Origami
In the blog post Haikus and artificial intelligence, I demonstrated than chatbots can create reasonably successful haikus – you know, those Japanese short poems about nature.
Another special art form, originating in Japan, is origami, the traditional Japanese art of folding paper to make objects and figures.
The word “origami” is derived from the Japanese words “oru”(folding) and “kami” (paper). With origami, complex and detailed sculptures can be created solely by folding a single sheet of paper, without cutting or gluing. Examples of traditional origami objects include cranes, flowers, butterflies and boxes.
Modern origami artists, however, have taken the medium to new heights with a variety of designs, from detailed animals to complex geometric shapes. Origami can be both a relaxing hobby and a serious artistic endeavor.
Haikus
I experimented with a combination of haiku, origami and artificial intelligence. ChatGPT 4.0 asked me to come up with three haiku:
Softly the wind whispers
Leaves dance in the light
Silence speaks of tranquility
Blossoms budding
Spring awakens from her slumber
New life breathes
Winter, stars cold
in the whispering night
snow covers everything softly
Haikus and origami
With these three generated haiku, I set to work in one of the various AI art generators at my disposal. In the end, from the three haiku above, I managed to create several works of art each that clearly exude the atmosphere and typical peculiarities of origami – judge for yourself.
However, it has not been possible to generate ready-made folding diagrams so that we could work on them ourselves with real paper. Pity? Ah – even artificial intelligence has limitations….
