The future of pencil and brush
AI and art, technology and art are like yin and yang; They may seem contradictory, but together they form a harmonious whole.
However, it is a question that has brought the world of art and technology into conflict: can art created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) be considered Art with a capital ‘K’?
Let’s answer this question from multiple perspectives.
Art according to traditional artists – human creativity
Art critics and traditional artists swear by human creativity as the essence of art. According to them, art is a reflection of human experience, emotion and interpretation. In that perspective, AI is just a tool and cannot approach the complexity of the human mind. But as an old saying goes: ‘the beauty of the suitor lies in the suitor’s eye’ or in this case: the beauty of Art lies in the eyes of the beholder.
The pragmatic vision: creativity in coding
The pragmatic school of thought, consisting of technologists and progressive artists, believes that AI can indeed generate art. They see coding as a new form of creativity.
Why would a poem written by an AI be less valuable than a poem written by a human? For them, the essence of art is not tied to the source, but to the end product and the experience it brings about.
Between two worlds: the hybrid approach
A third point of view comes from a group that is somewhere between the traditional and pragmatic view. They embrace the idea of a hybrid model in which AI and human artists work together.
Here, for example, AI can serve as a means to increase human creativity and unlock new artistic possibilities. According to them, artificial intelligence can promote art, but it cannot create art on its own.
Conclusion: art or artificial?
The question of whether AI can create art or whether art can be created with the help of AI remains largely subjective. The answer depends on our definition of art and how we allow this definition to evolve with time and technological developments.
One thing is certain: the fusion of AI and art creates fascinating discussions and new possibilities. It stimulates our imagination and challenges us to rethink traditional definitions and boundaries. No matter where you stand in this debate, the fusion of AI and art is a fascinating playing field that only gets more interesting. It’s a dialogue that’s far from closed, but will undoubtedly continue to captivate as long as art and AI continue to evolve.
