The position of a dictator is often romanticized in his own country as a place of ultimate power and control. However, that is a sham.<\/p>\n

The dictator finds himself in a kind of golden cage, cut off from reality. He is surrounded by yes-men and opportunists who only go round and round the shielded leader. The world inside the cage may be pleasant, filled with luxury and apparent loyalty, but it’s an illusion.<\/p>\n

One of the greatest dangers of dictatorship is the loss of a realistic worldview. The staff, afraid to antagonize such a figure, filters information in such a way that it caresses the dictator’s ego.<\/p>\n

This creates a kind of echo chamber of confirmation and self-aggrandizement, causing the despot to lose sight of the real world.<\/p>\n

While the dictator thinks he is supreme, the irony is that he is a slave to his own system. His power depends on maintaining this illusion of omnipotence. He invariably dismisses war crimes by denying them.<\/p>\n

The system becomes fragile; A small disruption can lead to the collapse of the entire house of cards. In this sense, the dictator is not so much a figure of power as one of tragic impotence.<\/p>\n

History is full of examples of dictators who, blinded by their own greatness, overthrew themselves.<\/p>\n

They often fail to understand that their isolation and removal from reality lead to decisions that spell not only their demise, but also that of their nation.<\/p>\n

The dictator is both the guard and the prisoner in his golden cage. His power and powerlessness are inextricably linked, a symbiotic relationship that often leads to the collapse of both the dictator and the country he rules.<\/p>\n
